Spas and Pools in Ribera de Chapala
Thermal waters, private pool retreats and the unhurried pace that Lake Chapala is made for.
The Ribera de Chapala has a quality of time that is hard to find anywhere else in Mexico. The altitude keeps the temperature mild year-round — rarely hot enough to be oppressive, rarely cool enough to require anything heavier than a light layer. The lake is always visible. The mountains are always there. The pace is entirely its own. This is the place to slow down completely.
The Thermal Pools at San Juan Cosalá
Twelve kilometres west of Ajijic, the village of San Juan Cosalá sits on a geothermal spring that has been feeding public and private pools for generations. The water comes out of the ground at around 35–38°C and fills a series of outdoor pools overlooking the lake. The Hotel Balneario San Juan Cosalá is the most established option — day passes are available without an overnight stay. Go on a weekday morning. The weekend crowds are local and lively, which is its own pleasure, but if you want quiet water in a quiet landscape, a Wednesday at 10am is the time.
Insider Tip
The thermal pools are free of sulphur — no egg smell, no mineral discomfort. Just warm, clean water in an outdoor setting with lake views. Bring your own towel. Wednesday mornings are the quietest.
“Exelente place to relax and enjoy nature the accept credit cards so you don't have to carry a lot of cash but still you should have some mexican pesos to pay for small items”
The Lake at Dawn
The most underrated relaxation activity in the Ribera requires nothing and costs nothing. The lake at 6:30am — before the wind comes up, before the boats are out, before the light has fully arrived — is extraordinary. Walk down to the malecón in Ajijic. Find a bench. Do not bring your phone. The water is silver-grey and completely still. This lasts approximately 45 minutes before the town wakes up and the lake becomes something else.
Insider Tip
Do not bring your phone. This is not a recommendation. The 45-minute window of stillness before the town wakes is genuinely rare — a phone reduces it to a photograph session and the stillness is gone.

Afternoon on the Terrace
The ANANA properties in the Ribera are designed around the afternoon. The terraces face west or south — toward the lake or toward the mountains — and the light between 4pm and sunset is the best the region offers. The temperature drops gently. The light goes gold, then amber, then the mountains go dark. There is genuinely nothing required of you during this hour except to be present for it.
Insider Tip
Have a drink ready before 4pm. The light changes fast at this altitude and the first twenty minutes of golden hour on the lake are the best. You do not want to miss them finding the corkscrew.
“Guests always arrive with a list. By day three, the list is gone. That is the Ribera working. It is one of the very few places I know that reliably does this to people.”
