How to Do Absolutely Nothing in Tulum — Perfectly

A guide to the art of the slow day. Pool, hammock, and a book that stays closed.

Tulum sells itself as a wellness destination. Yoga at sunrise, sound healing, cacao ceremonies, breathwork. All of it exists and some of it is genuinely worthwhile. But the most underrated activity in Tulum is doing none of it — and doing it properly. Here is how a perfect slow day actually works.

The Morning

Wake up without an alarm. The jungle around the ANANA homes in Tulum has its own alarm system — birds, mostly, starting around 6am and tapering off by 8. Make coffee. Sit with it by the pool. Leave your phone inside for the first hour. The jungle sounds, the light through the palms — none of it improves with a screen involved.

The Pool at Noon

The Tulum heat between noon and 3pm is not a problem if you are in the water. The private pools at the ANANA homes stay cool through shade and circulation. This is the time to be horizontal. Bring a book you have been meaning to read for two years. Leave it mostly unread. That is fine too. The pool is coolest in the shaded section — move with the shade as the afternoon progresses. This requires no planning, only the willingness to move a float twenty centimetres every hour.

La Valise Beach

Walk to the beach after 4pm when the light changes and the temperature drops to something manageable. The Caribbean at this hour has a quality of light that does not appear in the morning. La Valise beach is the quietest stretch on the hotel zone — no vendors, no sun bed rental, no amplified music. Swim out past the swimmers. Float. Face up toward the sky. Stay until you are cold.

Insider Tip

Arrive after 4pm and you will often have a long stretch of La Valise to yourself. Swim out thirty metres and turn back toward the shore — the jungle canopy meeting the sea is the image you will remember longest.

La Valise is a beautiful, intimate boutique hotel. Only 22 rooms makes for a quiet and relaxing stay. Our room on the jungle side included an outdoor patio with plunge pool and an upstairs private patio. The breakfast buffet was delicious and provided a great view of the ocean. Lunch and dinner also featured great food. The service was excellent due to the amazing staff. Alfredo was our concierge and he did a great job. Jesus went above and beyond. He checked in on us throughout the day and made our trip extra special. Anna was our server at breakfast and she too was very helpful and extremely pleasant. Eddie was our server at dinner and breakfast as well. He made sure our experience was extra special. We have never stayed at a property with such a great staff and hope to return again! #LaValise

Hartwood

For dinner, Hartwood runs entirely on wood fire and changes its menu daily based on what arrived from local farms and fishing boats that morning. No reservations — arrive when they open at 6pm and put your name down. Wait at the bar. Order the fish. On a slow day, this is the correct amount of effort: show up, wait, eat well. The local market on the main road is the other option — excellent tacos and fresh juice for under 150 pesos, and no waiting at all.

Insider Tip

Hartwood closes when the food runs out, not at a fixed hour. On a slow day, arriving at 6pm is the right pace — you have nowhere to be and the full menu is in front of you.

Last night's dinner at Hartwood was PERFECT! We had: Collar de pescado (basically sea bass cheeks) Whole grilled red snapper with papaya salad. Can't remember the last time I had snapper this well cooked and seasoned. Honey Pie (this alone was worth the trip). Imagine a perfectly baked cake, moist but not wet, perfect honey flavor with other spices, pie crust bottom, salt sprinkled base. Thick seasoned whip cream on top Best service (Bianca) and ambiance. Drinks were also very good, we had the "Gasper" (not on menu) and Pina Habanero Margarita 🔥

The guests who seem happiest when they leave are always the ones who did less than they planned. Tulum rewards people who slow down.
