Best Trails in Font Romeu

High altitude walking, Pyrenees summits and cross-country routes with Mediterranean views on clear days.

Font Romeu sits at 1,800 metres on the Cerdagne plateau — a high, open landscape surrounded by Pyrenean peaks on three sides and open toward the Mediterranean on the fourth. In summer, when the ski lifts stop and the plateau empties, this becomes one of the finest walking regions in France. The trails are largely unmarked on commercial maps, the altitude keeps the heat manageable, and on clear days the sea is visible 120 kilometres to the south.

Pic del Géant (2,884m)

The most rewarding summit accessible from Font Romeu without technical climbing. The route begins near the ski station at Pyrénées 2000 and climbs steadily through subalpine meadow to the ridge. The summit view encompasses the entire Cerdagne plateau, the Canigou massif to the east, and on exceptional days the glint of the Mediterranean above the coastal haze. Five hours return, 1,000 metres of elevation gain. Start before 8am in summer to avoid afternoon thunderstorms.

Insider Tip

Target the summit by 11am and begin descent immediately after. Pyrenean afternoon storms build fast and the exposed ridge above 2,500 metres is not where you want to be when lightning arrives.

An excellent destination for our group! I have to commend the great skills and professionalism of the Font Romeu Altiservice who helped us down from an incident on “Bouton d’Or”. My sister broke her collarbone in a fall. They responded and were on scene within 8 minutes, safely got her down from the mountain and helped us into the ambulance. The medical staff were excellent also, she was X-ray’d within 5 minutes of leaving the ambulance.

The Plateau Trails

The Cerdagne plateau itself offers 120 kilometres of cross-country ski trails that convert to walking paths in summer. These are the trails for people who want altitude without ascent — wide, well-maintained, largely flat, with views across the plateau to the surrounding peaks. The circuit from Font Romeu to Eyne and back is approximately 20 kilometres and takes in the botanical reserve of the Vallée d'Eyne — one of the richest alpine flora sites in France, with over 1,400 plant species.

Insider Tip

The Vallée d'Eyne section is the highlight — a botanical reserve with over 1,400 alpine plant species. Go in June or July when the wildflowers are at peak. The plateau in flower at 1,800 metres is something else entirely.

Gorges du Carança

Forty minutes from Font Romeu, the Têt river has carved a spectacular gorge through the pre-Pyrenean limestone. The trail follows the gorge via a series of suspended walkways bolted into the cliff face — a via ferrata section that requires no special equipment but tests those with a fear of heights. The gorge ends at a series of natural pools. The round trip is 10 kilometres and takes three to four hours. Go on a weekday — it is a popular day trip from Perpignan at weekends.

Insider Tip

Do not attempt the gorge if you have a serious fear of heights. The suspended walkways over the water are safe but exposed. If you are uncertain, go anyway — most people find they are fine once they start moving.

Amazing place, a lot of bridges at the beginning. Probably the most beautiful valley of the eastern Pyrénées. Starts with beautiful forest and finishes with several beautiful lakes before the crest which offers a great view over spain and France. A 2-days journey with a night in the refuge.

The plateau is the hiking. People want the summit, and the summit is worth doing once. But the plateau — the space of it, the light at this altitude, the silence — that is what you come back for.
